Grammar Pronunciation Rules ▾

1. Long vowels

Long vowels are represented in writing by doubling the letters of the corresponding vowels and should be pronounced together, as one long sound.

2. Special sounds Ө, Ү, Ң

The sounds Ө, Ү, Ң and the final consonant "г" have no equivalents in Russian. Learn to pronounce them correctly: a) vowel Ө – pronounce the vowel "ə", maintaining the position of the tongue, round and protrude the lips forward, as when pronouncing the vowel "о". English example: "nURse"; b) vowel Ү – [ü] - pronounce the vowel "i", maintaining the position of the tongue, round and protrude the lips forward, as when pronouncing the vowel "u"; c) consonant Ң – [ŋ] - lift the back of the tongue until it touches the soft palate, thereby closing the exit of air through the mouth; exhaled air should pass through the nose. English example: "soNG"; d) final consonant "г" – [g] - more voiced than the Russian "г" in words like "бог" - [bog] -(god) and "когда" - [kogda] - (when); this sound is formed in the gap between the root of the tongue and the small soft palate.

3. Stress

In Tuvan words, stress usually falls on the last syllable.
